  • Total Gym vs Weider – Pros and Cons
  • Benefits of Home Gym: Why Exactly You Need a Home Gym System

Every gymgoer has dreamt about owning a home gym at least once in his/her life.

No noisy, huuuge fellow bodybuilders, no need to make time-consuming trips to the gym, no more annoying music that is blasting out from speakers…

Weider Ultimate Body Works vs Total Gym: Which One Should You Get?

Today, we review two of the most popular home gyms on the market–  the Total Gym XLS and Weider Ultimate Body Works  – to look for their pros and cons and determine the absolutely best – or beast – in this field.

Total Gym XLS

With the Total Gym system you use your bodies own weight to do the exercises, which is why it can be used by so many regardless of age, body type or fitness.

This also allows you to exercise without risk for injury, as you do not push your body too hard, with too much weight.

This style of exercise has lots of pros.

You can  stay fit and agile regardless of your age .

Bigger people can easily use it to lose weight.

Its a machine everybody can use, kids, men, women and the elderly.

The “downside” of this type of exercise is that it does not build large muscle. Which is not really a downside for most, but only those looking for large bulgy muscles.

The materials used to create the Total Gym XLS are gilt-edged (the mere fact that the machine can hold up to 400 lbs. in maximum user weight says a lot about the quality).

 Bonus: the training system arrives fully assembled and is ready for immediate use.

Weider Ultimate Body Works

This powerful multi-exercise home trainer can replace the entire gym in one machine. The Weider Ultimate Body Works is well assembled and is stable on the floor.

It’s a good quality for a reasonable price. It has just exactly what you need for it to give you a good, all-muscle workout at home. Meaning: nothing in excess, because excess costs more.

Materials and Assembly Quality

What Total Gym and Weider Ultimate Body Works Have in Common

  • The framework is made of high quality steel;
  • The bench is made of durable plastic upholstered with a sweat- and wear-resistant vinyl;
  • The handles are soft-rubber coated;
  • The cables made of strength steel and are covered with vinyl (Weider specified that it is polyvinyl chloride shield – PVC sheets).

Some Differences:

  • In the Weider Ultimate Body Works, the rollers are based on very durable long lasting sealed ball bearings, while in the Total Gym XLS they are precision bearing rollers;
  • In the Weider, there are painted steel pulleys, while the Total Gym features chromed steel pulleys.

Space Saver Design

The home gym comes with additional accessories: wing attachment, toe-clips for leg pulling and ankle cuffs

Cost

The Weider Ultimate Body Works is quite a bit cheaper.

However, it’s not all about price, as the Total Gym XLS has an outstanding quality that justifies the price tag.

Function

Both machines are literally multifunctional. Using these two personal training machines at home, you can train all your muscle groups: chest, back, biceps, triceps, shoulders and legs.

Not to mention that the Total Gym XLS comes with very useful accessories that doubles the list of possible exercises.

With the Weider Ultimate Body Works, you wouldn’t be able to perform as many leg exercises as in the Total Gym XLS.

Resistance

With the Total Gym XLS, the training intensity can be adjusted with the bench incline. The Weider Ultimate Body Works comes with the same resistance feature, but also makes it possible to adjust resistance with 4 resistance bands. You can add about 50 extra pounds to your own body weight.

Maximum User Weight and Height

Total Gym XLS can hold individuals weighing up to 400 lbs., while the Weider Ultimate Body Works has a weight limit of 250 lbs.

For most people, the 250 lbs. limit is quite enough, but still having more maximum user weight may be a good idea as you never know who will be using the machine.

With the Total Gym XLS, men and women taller than 6’2” may not be able to perform exercises properly. In the Weider Ultimate Body Works, the maximum height was not specified by the manufacturer.

If you’re a tall individual, it would be a good idea to contact the seller and ask them about the maximum height limit. (In the comments, users say the Weider Ultimate Body Works may fit 6’3” tall people).

Warranty

Total Gym XLS: 2 years warranty on moving parts and  lifetime warranty for the frame . Please note that there is no warranty support for commercial use of the product.

Weider Ultimate Body Works: 90 days warranty for the entire gym system.

This is one of the biggest differences, and a very compelling reason to consider the Total Gym over Weider. 90 days is a very short warranty, and the Total Gym offers a lifetime warranty for the frame.

Floor Space and Weight

Total Gym XLS:

  • In Use: W 19” x L 90” x H 43”
  • Folded: W 19” x L 51” x H 9”
  • 82 lbs.

Weider Ultimate Body Works:

  • Folded: L 59”, all other dimensions are not specified.
  • 77 lbs.

Benefits of Home Gym: Why Exactly You Need a Home Gym System

“Well, why don’t I just buy a gym membership? Wouldn’t it be less expensive?” you may ask. Well, it wouldn’t!

First of all, if you own a multifunctional gym system at home, you will save an inordinate amount of money on those costly gym memberships (and their prices are going up and up, aren’t they?). Your gym system only needs a single, one-time investment (no more wasting of up to $1,000 on gym memberships every year).

Second of all, you will save an impressive amount of your precious time, as you won’t have to make time-consuming trips to and from the gym.

Third of all, you won’t have to care about some specific time in the day to work out (or be scared of business hours) any longer, as you, as the owner of the home gym system, will decide when and how you want to use that multifunctional machine.

Another beauty of having a personal training system is that you won’t have to buy gym memberships for all your family members in case they want to become athletic (do the math what, let’s say, 4 memberships would do to your budget), as your family can use the gym system with you.

Bottom line is this: “Time is money,” as said by Benjamin Franklin in Advice to a Young Tradesman back in 1746. “And a home gym is your ultimate choice for staying fit!” that’s what we have to add.
